From the dead end of atonality" leads the music of Alexander Asteriades. And it is no coincidence that the composition of piano-accompanied songs, entirely in the tradition of the 19th century, forms an essential part of his oeuvre. As with the great models, Goethe, Eichendorff and Möricke can be found among the text poets - but then also Georg Trakl and Nikos Kazantzakis. Asteriades sets the latter's "Heil dir, Mensch!" to music with an added "Kikeriki!" in a highly original way - and thus shows that tonal composing can indeed be progressive.
