The One-Hit-Wonder is by no means a phenomenon of modern pop music, even opera history is full of it. Pietro Mascagni owes it to the sensational premiere success of his one-act play Cavalleria rusticana that his name has been preserved in the music world. The opera, which the young Mascagni wrote in 1889 on the occasion of a composition competition organized by the music publisher Sonzogno, became a worldwide opera hit, the success of which the composer unfortunately could never quite match. Nevertheless: Cavalleria rusticana also became the basis of a musical-dramatic reorientation, which no longer placed myths at the centre of the plot, but focused on the life of the small, simple man. In Maurizio Scaparro's production, the plot has left the opera house and takes place on the open-air stage of the legendary Roman baths of Baia. But Scaparro has not been tempted by this magnificent backdrop to lose sight of the essential. For all its opulence, this cavalleria still has the intense density and exciting sharpness of a chamber play, which is so important for this opera.
